In 1961 Rambler changed the appearance of the V-8 Ambassador, the 117 inch wheel-base retained the unit body and chassis  construction. The engine continued as the 250 HP V-8 with a 327-cubic -inch displacement, with compression ratio of 8.7 to 1, a two barrel carburetor and single exhaust.  Optional configuration was a four-barrel carb 9.7 to 1 compression and a dual exhaust system., this “power-pack” developed 270 horsepower. The Ambassador like all other American Motors cars were equipped with ceramic-coated  mufflers guaranteed for the life of the car. Syncromesh transmissions were standard.

In 1961 Rambler made changes In what became known as the Classic series, a new aluminum six-cylinder engine with a 195-cubic-inch displacement. This new engine had the same basic design of over-head-valve, cast-iron design. The cylinder block was die cast with iron “sleeves” or Cylinder liners. The cylinder head was a cast iron alloy. Weight saving from the previous model was 80 pounds. Horsepower of the six was 127, there was a 200 Horsepower V-8 was a option.

1961 Oldsmobile

In 1961 Oldsmobile offered the three series of cars; Dynamic 88, Super 88 and the 98. The first two series came on a 123-inch-wheelbase with an overall length of 212 inches. The major difference between the two were interior trim and engine.

The Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 had a 250-horsepower version of the 394-cubic-inch engine, while the Super 88 version was rated at 325-HPthanks to higher compression ratio and a four-barrel carburetor. Syncromesh manual transmission was offered as an option to the standard Hydra-matic on the 88’s.

The Oldsmobile 98 was only available with the 325 HP engine and Hydra-matic automatic transmission. The 98 came with a wheelbase of 126 inches and was over all six inches longer than the 88, most of the extra length was added to the passenger compartment.

The 61 Desoto came in two models, two and four-door hardtop, both on the 122-inch wheelbase unit construction body. The engine was 361-cubic-inch V-8 with a two-barrel carburation. They used the Chrysler Corp. TorqueFlite automatic. Power brakes and Power steering were optional extras.

Imperial produced three models in 1961; the custom, crown and LeBaron. The four-door hardtop was offered in all three series; a two-door hardtop is offered in Custom or Crown and a convertible in the Crown series. All models sported the 413-cubic-inch V8 which produced 350 horsepower. Visually in 61 the styling of the front end with chrome-plated headlamps and a new style grille.

Restyled for 61 Cadillac retained the fins but changed the side panels,and Grille. The Limited production El Dorado Brougham was dropped, the “60” Special for 61 had a “formal” rear quarter and smaller rear window. Roof lines were given a new “knife-edge”.
